Attached is an article that the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) has prepared for national and even international distribution to organizations that were part of the volunteer effort to help New York City after 9/11.

As you know, many volunteers who worked on the rescue, recovery and cleanup operation have developed serious respiratory and/or mental disorders, such as chronic bronchitis or post-traumatic stress disorder, requiring ongoing medical treatment. New York State has now amended its Workers’ Compensation Law to make it possible for volunteers who are already sick to file a workers’ compensation claim and for volunteers who are concerned about becoming sick to file a claim if they ever become sick by registering now.

NYCOSH has been active in fighting for medical treatment for workers and volunteers who have become sick in the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center. We are concerned that many of those eligible for this new workers’ compensation registration program will not register because they are unaware of the new legislation. Since workers and volunteers came from around the country it is crucial that the new program be widely publicized. The deadline for registration is August 14, 2007.

For information about registering and filing claims, visit the NYCOSH website at http://www.nycosh.org/#911WC. Or call 212-227-6440 ext. 23 (for English) or 212-227-6440 ext. 24 (for Spanish)
